The first translation I read YEARS ago was Constance Garnett's from 1901, and it didn't have even a fraction of the life-force of the Pevear/Volokhonsky version. (1713-68) had a marked influence on the young Tolstoy, particularly with his Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy(1768), which stands behind Tolstoy's first piece of fiction, 'A History of Yesterday' (1851), and part of which Tolstoy translated. This enormous, 4-pound, 1,273-page Vintage Classics edition of War and Peace tipped the helmet. Tolstoy, War & Peace (Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky's translation, Alfred A. Zhivago is not a novel in the usual sense. There are essentially twelve English translations (or versions) of War and Peace to date, (if you count Bromfield's so-called "Disney Version" and Komroff's radical abridgement of the Garnett translation -- see my notes below.) As I have already alluded to, abridgements of the work are on the market and I cannot generally .. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, who have also translated War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are behind this new version of Boris Pasternak's breathtakingly wonderful novel. As one who gave up reading War and Peace twice but breezed through it the third time because it was the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation, I am delighted to hear that Turgenev is next in line! Since Tolstoy seems to have command of ever facet of literary technique in War and Peace, why should metaphor be an exception? Reading: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (Pevear and Volokhonsky translation). This new version by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky — who most recently, in 2007, gave us their War and Peace— won't change that. I chose the Pevear/Volokhonsky by the way. (In my last post, I introduced the strange--strange, to me anyway--use of the phrase "clerical persons" in the Unction scene in Volume 1, Book 1 of War and Peace. I don't know if that's maybe my translation, (I'm reading a different translator--Pevear & Volokhonsky) or just a case of the book being longer and more ambitious.
